“Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another heart whispers back. Those who wish to sing always find a song. At the touch of a lover, everyone becomes a poet.”
-Plato-
It has been a year and some days since we got married. It has been one year of an infinite more. My wife sleeps with my lazy dogs past two fans worth of noise in the bedroom. The sky is cool dusted purple and orange, the city lights muted by an incoming morning haze. The air and relaxation is a daydream of nighttime while I curl thoughts back on about a year or so ago.
One hundred and fifty different minds and memories scattered amongst the tumbleweeds and dirt snakes. Three hundred eyes watching a burning thunderstorm light up the horizon. Three hundred ears listening to this sasquatch and his ladyhawk take forever vows.
The best wedding gift we got is the memories. I can pick an apple off that tree of time and take a bite anytime I need it. Kid laughter and scavenger hunts. A kitchen filled with leftover cheeses and crackers. A shark strumming guitar. My wife in her wedding dress walking a smile across the sunkissed dirt and our wall of family and friends.
In lieu of dinner speeches we laid out neon flash cards and asked a series of questions to the guests at our wedding. There are only so many opportunities in life to survey the variety of all those whom care for you. So we asked for advice, thoughts, wishes, stories and wisdom. We put out some prompts as well
What is your spirit animal?
Who do you wish was here that wasn’t able to make it?
What is the best song of all time?
What is your hope for the next 50 years?
Where should we live?
What have you learned?
Make up a color name and describe it
What is something that everyone needs to know?
What is something no one needs to know?
I know so little about so much.
I know that a year and some days ago were some of the best days of my life. And I know that my years and days will continue to be filled with the advice, thoughts, wishes, stories and wisdom shared with us then. There is a song we can sing with only changing rhythm, lyrics and melody. It never sounds the same. I can’t teach it to anyone. But I can hear it. I can write it down and I can share it.
These are some of the ideas shared with us some seasons ago. I’m trying to make it sound more romantic than it is, because it was more romantic than it is.
I’m lucky for all the thoughts and moments.
I’m thankful for the song.
I appreciate you listening.
Feel free to sing along.
…thanks to everyone who made this happen…
Amber waves, Corn, Football? Nah. The precise aroma of the primitive wooden bathroom at Fremont lakes is my primary takeaway
